Tips on saving time and money when designing your strawbale and earth home

  1. Design to your bales, the height of the walls is critical eg. The height of your walls should ideally be as low as you can get them eg 2450mm high from floor to ceiling. This way you can keep working at heights to a minimum. If you’re any higher, it will increase your building costs significantly. You want to design to the bales or materials you’re using. So you don’t want to have to build to the materials when on site. Cutting a strawbale horizontally through a bale is quite difficult so that’s why the height of the walls is critical.
  2. Decide if the strawbales are on their flat or sides (if on the side you’ll save a bit in bale costs as there are less bales used). This way you can work out what height the walls are
